I am actually doing something productive...

Hello, I am doing a research project for my 'A2 Media Studies Critical Research' about wether foreign directors become more 'Americanised' as they get more well known. I am looking at Baz Luhrmann's 'Red Curtain Trilogly' and how from Strictly Balroom to Moulin Rouge the cast are dramatically different. My overall outcome is to see wether the cast would affect the popularity of the film.

I think my question Im asking is does the cast of a film affect wether you would watch it or not and would it affect your overall opinion of the film?

If anyone reading this has an opinion on the matter it would really help me out if you could reply to this.

Thanks. X

Yes and no. Personally if a film looks half decent, I'd watch it. If its by certain director I follow, I'd watch it. If its got actors in that I love (famous/unknown), I'd watch it. But on the other hand, sometimes an unfamiliar cast is better cos they don't come with the baggage of typically big actors. I think it depends on the actors and the film makers (Why he uses those actors?)

Also I think he was finding his feet with 'Strictly Ballroom' he gained attention and slowly through 'Romeo & Juliet' (using actors such as DiCaprio that were mainstream but trying to do out of the box stuff) then to 'Moulin Rouge' he really stepped into his own.

For me personally the movie stars didn't affect it as they were subsidiary to the master piece he was trying to create within the films and in my opinion succeeded in making.

Sorry if this makes no sense, Im crap at this.

I think that directors do generally become Americanised in all areas of their film as they get more famous, unless they conciously make a decision not to change, but generally they do have to for the film to actually make a bit of money.. and the more Americanised and Hollywood commerical it becomes, the more cinema's it'll reach.
The cast is important, if you've got a babe of a cast thats going to entertain then hell yeah I'm going to be watching it. But then again, if you only ever watch films with famous actors or actresses in, when will you see the new actors? Also, it's totally not all about the cast. If it's got great actors in and its a crap storyline, hell no am I going watching it.
Hope that helps. X
